Karen Aldous – One Moment at Sunrise

Setting for One Moment at Sunrise

Reading is all about escaping. Whether to another era, planet, somebody else’s world or to another place other than our own four walls or routine, books have that amazing capacity to off-load us of our worries and enrich us with all sorts of possibilities we know we could physically, never engage in. This is the reason why I adore being immersed, especially in a book which allows me to soak up warm, exotic locations where I can feel the heat of the sun on my skin whilst being drenched in its beautiful descriptions and of course, it’s gripping story.

One Moment at Sunrise is set in one of those gorgeous locations – the south of France, in an area close to the Mediterreanean and in particular, Canal Royale des Deux Mers which was opened for navigators on the 15th May 1681 as a trade route but began with what I considered a riveting story. It is now better known as a leisure-canal-cruise destination, the Canal du Midi but was initiated as a vision for a salt-tax collector, an opportunitst by the name of Pierre-Paul Riquet, not even an engineer, but rich and possibly seeking social dignity which of course, he eventually did. But it was a mammoth task to build a waterway from the Atlantic to the Mediterannean in order to transport goods across the country to avoid Gibralter and include the infrastructure to support it. The problem for Riquet was that the landscape in this region was mountainous and, no one had previously attempted such a complex or ambitious project before, particulary the elevation studies and the water estimations required to fill the canal. Riquet faced numerous obstacles to get this project off the ground, particularly from King Louis XIV who wanted to own the project and from nobles who owned the land on which he wanted to build and, with the construction itself.

It was this construction of the Canal du Midi which held such fascination for me when I discovered how the ‘genius’ Riquet obtained the vast amount of hydraulics knowledge required to undertake the work and overcome issues of such magnitude. In this story, I was compelled to bring the ‘genius’ of the peasant women to the fore as they provided so much of the knowledge, skills and labour to make his project work, I felt it was essential they achieve recognition they so greatly deserve.
